Facial Acupuncture for Bell's Palsy

I received a question from an acupuncturist who'd just bought my book. She had a related question regarding a new patient who'd initially received acupuncture for Bell's Palsy three years ago. The patient's mouth had been affected most severely and treatment had been stopped before a full recovery was made.

The practitioner felt it was worth trying and was thinking about using my book to help however, she was concerned that treatment after so many years stood little chance realistically. These were my thoughts:

A. Many thanks for buying my book The Pocket Guide to Facial Enhancement Acupuncture, I hope you enjoy it. With regard to your enquiry about Bell's Palsy, I would certainly give the patient some treatment, I know it's been a while but you won't do any harm and I'm pretty confident that you might be able to help. I've treated a few patients with this condition and it's helped, although it's generally been early on in the diagnosis.

There are 28 face and body points that I've chosen as part of my cosmetic acupuncture protocol and, of these, over a third can also be used in the treatment of facial paralysis. During cosmetic treatment we're also aiming to 'lift' the face, so points such as ST4 and ST5 can be used for deviation of the mouth, for example, in both the treatment of Bell's Palsy and during cosmetic acupuncture. I think you'll find my book helpful in this particular case, due to the reasons behind the points used.

I'm sure that if you work out a treatment plan and stimulate the facial muscle you'll be able to help with this condition.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: Enhancing the Cheek Area

Q. Can you give me some tips on achieving a 'grabbing sensation' when needling the cheek area?

A. Lesson 5 of my Facial Enhancement Acupuncture online course focuses on needling the cheek and chin area. There are a couple of points I use at this stage of my protocol that, if needled correctly, will produce what I call a 'grabbing sensation'.

Students often ask for some tips on how to achieve this. Firstly, I always encourage them to practice this technique, as more often than not, this is the key to getting the desired effect. What I'm looking for is for them to work with the facial muscles and the 'grabbing sensation' shows that the needles are inserted correctly (at a 45 degree angle in this instance) and to the right depth. The student, of course, must also use their own experience and judgement when needling, especially when gauging the depth.

The points that I use throughout my protocol have been chosen with a holistic viewpoint, balancing the patient on the inside too. Although, for certain areas I'm particularly looking to 'lift' the face and tighten the muscles. So, I also suggest that students come back to the needle, if they feel it needs more tension, once they've carried out some of the next steps in the protocol.

I haven't listed the points I use here, as it's important to have worked through the lessons in order. But, hopefully this question gives you a brief insight into one of the needling techniques used to enhance the cheek area.

Book Recommendation: Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford

Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition is a book I return to time and time again. It's a fantastic reference book for acupuncture students, practitioners and anyone interested in holistic healing through diet and nutrition.

As a 5 Element Acupuncturist, I find the section on the Chinese elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water and the therapeutic uses of the 5 flavours particularly fascinating.

The author covers a vast array of dietary suggestions for a wide range of diseases/issues and the book contains 300 recipes detailing their healing properties in relation to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

From my perspective, facial acupuncture is a holistic treatment that not only works on the outside, but focuses on balancing the inside too. In this respect, Pitchford's book discusses foods and herbs that may aid a number of skin conditions including acne, eczema and psoriasis. And, in the 5 element section, he discusses the Metal element in relation to the lungs and their role in skin vitality, suggesting foods that can be eaten to nourish this element.*

It's easy to look up an issue in the comprehensive index and find particular recommendations for foods and their healing properties. For instance, a quick check on 'skin' leads us to, among others, Avocado: "...also known to beautify the skin".

We can only really touch upon a small part of this highly detailed book here, but suffice to say, it's a valuable addition to any bookshelf.

*I would recommend a visit to a qualified traditional acupuncturist to diagnose any elemental imbalances.

Cosmetic Acupuncture vs. Botox

More and more men and women are looking to keep their lines and wrinkles at bay, without resorting to the knife. But why should they choose acupuncture over the immediacy of BOTOX®?

Also known as botulinum toxin type A, BOTOX® has been approved for cosmetic use since 2002. When it's injected into the face, it literally paralyses the muscles. This is due to the prevention of a chemical called acetylcholine being released from the nerves. My facial patients often report that they feel healthier, sleep better, have brighter eyes and feel more balanced; those are the kind of side effects I like!

The acupuncture points and the way that they are used in a Facial Enhance session, for instance, have all been chosen specifically with this overall achievement of wellbeing in mind.

This treatment also works on lifting the face, particularly where the face begins to sag around the 'jowls' and the cheek area, rather than simply targeting wrinkles.

Japanese Acupuncturist Studies Facial Enhancement Acupuncture in Truro

Japanese acupuncturist Takao Ueda made the long journey from East to West to study Cosmetic Acupuncture with me in Truro last week.

I have trained acupuncturists worldwide to perform this natural, anti-ageing treatment. As a result, there are now practitioners in the UK, Europe, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Israel and the Caribbean.

Although, Takao is the first Japanese acupuncturist to study this form of treatment with me and according to him, “Facial Acupuncture is getting famous day-by-day in Japan” so he was keen to learn my protocol.

It was a pleasure to train Takao in Facial Enhancement Acupuncture, teaching is something that I really enjoy and I felt very privileged that he travelled such a long way to learn my style of treatment here in Cornwall.

Cosmetic acupuncture is a highly effective, natural treatment based on thousands of year's practice in China and was used as early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD - 1270AD) when the Empress and Emperors' concubines received the treatment.

Its popularity continues to grow and in 2004 the Telegraph reported that Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cher were all having weekly “acupuncture facelifts”.

The remarkable results of this treatment were documented in the mid nineties:

“Studies published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture in 1996 showed that of 300 people who received Facial Acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked results after their first treatment.”

Some Interesting Acupuncture Points

As part of my online course, students submit assignments following completion of each of the eight lessons.

It has been my pleasure to work with some very accomplished and inspiring acupuncturists over the years and the assignments I receive from all of my students, whatever their acupuncture background, are always fascinating and interesting to read.

I use a combination of 28 acupuncture points in my Facial Enhancement Acupuncture protocol. As I train TCM, 5 Element, Auricular and Western Medical acupuncturists, I ask them to consider 3 points that they feel could bring additional benefits to their patients or to research 3 of the points I recommend, detailing their use in this form of treatment.

With the kind permission of 5 Element Acupuncturist Dave Yeomans, I would like to share a small extract from his recent assignment:

"These are some of the points I have looked at! As well as treating facial appearance they also help things like glaucoma, paralysis, spasm, deafness to name but a few.

... Bl 2 is very effective in helping eyelid spasms. It is on the medial end of the eye brow above Bl 1. I would probably needle this along with Bl 17/18/20 known as the magnificent 6. Mag 6 nourish liver blood, the chief cause of ticks and spasms. I have also known Ht 7 stop a twitching eye lid, Ht 7 nourishes Ht blood and calms the shen. Bl 2 also sends liver yang down when it is rising into the head, this will improve the pallor and circulation ergo the muscle tone..."

Dave goes on to discuss other points (referencing Shanghai's Manual of Acupuncture) that can also be used for the conditions he lists in the first paragraph. This echoes my belief that cosmetic acupuncture is very much a holistic treatment - we are not only working on the outside, but on the inner self too, to build a foundation that will enable the person's natural beauty to shine through.

Needles for Cosmetic Acupuncture

I recently received this question from an American acupuncturist who had read my book The Pocket Guide to Facial Enhancement Acupuncture and wanted to know why I specifically use plastic needles for cosmetic treatments.

Q. Is there a special reason you like to use the plastic handles or would metal handled needles do as well?

A. I use plastic handled needles for cosmetic acupuncture because they are lighter and therefore, remain upright in the face. If I use metal handled needles the weight of them makes them lean over across the skin. This means that, due to the number of needles required in this treatment, it makes it more difficult to insert the other needles in the face. Using plastic handled needles make it much easier to perform the treatment as you can clearly see the areas of the face you are working on.

The training acupuncturists are given ensures that we take a thorough patient history before we commence treatment.

This is also crucial when conducting a cosmetic acupuncture treatment and I provide a free initial consultation to determine whether someone is able to undergo the procedure and to describe what they can expect from a course of Facial Enhancement Acupuncture.

Things to consider would be whether the patient has recently had microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, or a surgical face-lift. I would refrain from performing a cosmetic acupuncture treatment if a person suffers from chronic migraines, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes, is pregnant, has had a pacemaker fitted, during a cold or flu, during an allergic reaction or if someone has a problem with bleeding or bruising.

Sometimes it is possible to treat the patient's current health problems and then re-evaluate the patient at a later date to establish if they are now able to receive Facial Enhancement Acupuncture.

Some really great points to use in a cosmetic treatment

These are some lovely points that a student of mine has suggested, they are all great points that can be used during a cosmetic treatment.

LI-4 (Hegu) – This point expels wind, releases the exterior, regulates the face, eyes, nose, mouth and ears. It activates the channel and alleviates pain and is the Gao Wu Command Point for the face and mouth.

St-44 (Neiting) – Clears heat from the stomach meridian, clears damp-heat and alleviates pain in the face.

SJ-5 (Waiguan) - Expels wind and releases the exterior, benefits the head and ears, clears heat, activates the channel and alleviates pain.

GB-41 ( ) – Spreads Liver Qi, clears the head and benefits the eyes.

SI-3 (Houxi) – Clears wind and heat, activates meridian and alleviates pain, opens Du Mai.

Bl-62 (Shenmai) – Pacifies interior wind, expels exterior wind, benefits head and eyes, activates channel and alleviates pain, opens Yangqiao Mai.

Opening the Du and Yangqiao will have additional effects of expelling wind and benefit the eyes.

I really like the suggestions of SJ5 and BL62 and will be using these in my next treatment.

One Hundred Meetings

One Hundred Meetings or Upright Pillar, as it is sometimes known, is a great point for lifting, often used in the treatment of conditions such as prolapse. This is a point that I use in every cosmetic treatment exactly for those benefits of lifting.

This is a great technique for dealing with age spots or acne scars; you surround the area you are treating with needles pointing inwards, this directs qi and energy towards the offending area.

After a few treatments you should find the condition improves.

Leaving the Needles in Longer

I have been carrying out cosmetic acupuncture treatments for over 5 years now and the results do vary, but are always good. I have recently been experimenting with retaining the needles during treatments for longer than I have done in the past.

The way to do this is to insert the needles in the facial points and then leave the patient to relax, perhaps listen to some music and generally unwind. Obviously patients cannot lie on your couch for hours at a time, but if you can squeeze 20-30 minutes into a treatment you will achieve some fantastic results, also you will find the face starts to eject the needles if left any longer than this.

Try experimenting during treatments to find the optimum time that you leave the needles in to achieve the best results.

I have just completed a lovely Cosmetic treatment this morning, used BL1 which is something I rarely do.
Great point helps bring life to the eyes and eliminates the dark circles around the eyes.
Don't worry too much just go for it, a great point!

Auricular points used in a cosmetic treatment

These are some effective auricular points, suggested by a student of mine, that might be used in a cosmetic acupuncture procedure. I've listed them, with her kind permission, below:

ding chuan - to help relieve neck rigidity & shoulder stiffness in order to enhance the energy flow to the face.

nicotine - if a client smokes and is willing to quit in order to help their general health and skin condition, this will help to turn back the clock & improve their complexion & energy levels.

adrenal - if stress is a major factor causing premature aging, the adrenal point will balance out the hormone adrenaline if it has been overproduced by stress.

insomnia - if the client is having problems sleeping and therefore not getting the nourishing effects of a good night's sleep. This point benefits their emotional & physical health, also reducing dark circles and bags under the eyes.

kidney - if the client has a fear of aging and is generally run down and in need of a boost of energy or chi

Great points all worth considering.

What is Facial Enhancement Acupuncture?

Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is not just about how we look and how we want other people to see us. It's about how we feel inside and how those feelings express themselves on our faces. We are all lured by the images that we see on the television and in magazines showing the latest look that we should all aspire to, however, many of these expectations are unrealistic.

The pressure is on both men and women to look their best in order to succeed with their careers and their social lives. If we are not happy and contented on the inside then it is an unreasonable expectation for our faces to exude a radiance and natural beauty. "That's all well and good" you might say, "but I want to shed a few of these wrinkles and look a little younger".

We can do that no problem, but what I am saying is that in order to have any lasting effect on a person's outer beauty we need to work with their inner self to build a foundation that will enable the person's natural beauty to shine through.

Intradermal needles

Intradermal needles are a relatively new concept to most acupuncturists, I love them, they are a fantastic tool to use in cosmetic acupuncture treatments.

These needles are used in a cosmetic treatment to help eliminate the fine lines that appear as we get older. One of my favourite areas to work on with the intradermals is the line that tends to appear between the nose and the corner of the mouth; the nasal labial fold.

The key to effective working with these needles is to use a good quality pair of medical tweezers, these needles are so fine, and small, that without the correct equipment they will be impossible to insert.

Now that I've entered the world of blogging, I'm looking forward to keeping you up-to-date with my day to day work as an acupuncturist and talking about cosmetic acupuncture in general.

First things first, I should introduce myself. My name is Paul Adkins and I'm an acupuncturist living and working in Cornwall, UK. I qualified with an honours degree from the CTA Leamington College of 5 Element Acupuncture and I'm a member of the British Acupuncture Council.

As a Traditional 5 Element Acupuncturist, I still practice this wonderful form of acupuncture at my clinic in Truro, but I'm also widely known as the founder of Facial Enhancement Acupuncture.

To give you an overview, Facial Enhance is a contemporary cosmetic treatment based on ancient principles, it's a completely natural and holistic procedure and the results that can be acheived are fantastic! I now train many acupuncturists who successfully practice this treatment in their own clinics all over the world.
